From Christian Commune to Chabad
A young man's journey in the aftermath of the Pittsburgh shooting
In Spring Valley, deep in rural Pennsylvania, Bernard King grew up knowing he was Jewish – but not very much more than that. As the third generation of his mother's family to be part of the Bruderhof – a pacifist Christian commune that avoids personal property just as the Amish avoid modern technology – Bernard felt for the longest time that he just didn't fit it in.
In a world where everything is decided for you, he decided to take the difficult step out.
After encountering Rabbi Bernath in the aftermath of the Pittsburgh shooting, Bernard is coming to Montreal to share his story for the very first time outside of Pittsburgh. The grandson of Holocaust survivors, Bernard's story of return spans three continents – and generations.
