On May 13, dozens of volunteers gathered at the Chabad NDG on Hingston Ave. to braid and bake challah, a traditional Jewish bread. After mixing, kneading and letting the dough rise in the Jewish community centre's kitchen, volunteers of all ages, some learning the craft for the first time, carefully braided it into its traditional form.

Rabbi Yisroel Bernath, director of Chabad NDG in Montreal, “reluctantly” kept his word and donned a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey to deliver his Shabbat sermon this past weekend after losing a “spiritual wager” with a colleague in Florida.

There are many who say that the only religion in Montreal is hockey. There have been instances when religious figures have blessed the hockey team... Rabbi Yisroel Bernath is from Chicago, but after moving to Montreal to open Chabad of NDG he was “converted” into a Montreal Canadiens fan.

With seats in some local synagogues costing hundreds of dollars during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath said not everybody in the Jewish community can afford to pray at some of the more expensive synagogue-based-celebrations.
So, he's looking to provide a space to pray and eat together totally free of charge at the Rohr Chabad of NDG & Loyola Campus.

Churches have bought former synagogues in Montreal, but this may be the first time that a Jewish congregation has purchased a Christian house of worship – at least, in recent history. That’s what happened during the High Holidays: Chabad of NDG moved into the former St. Columba’s Anglican Church at 4020 Hingston Ave.

This past Simchas Torah, pedestrians on Monkland Avenue witnessed a unique parade of Sefer Torahs as Chabad of NDG and Loyola campus moved into their new location, a former Korean church on the corner of Hingston and Notre-Dame-de-Grace where the festivities concluded with the traditional Simchas Torah ceremonies.
